The area now covered with shops and go-go bars was once a banana plantation owned by the bank of Indochina. The land was sold to the Patpongpanich family just before the second world war for 60,000 Baht (1500 USD). The Patpongpanich family collects now more than 10 million Baht monthly (240.000 USD) from rent alone.
